Down South

Few places are as charming as the Southern region of the United States.  We’ve had some great times in some beautiful destinations in the South.

With a Pirate at the Pirates’ House in Savannah

In Georgia, be sure to visit one of my favorite cities, Savannah.  Often regarded as a great place for couples, Savannah offers fun for families, too.  If you enjoy Pirate lore, The Pirates’ House is not to be missed.  You’ll enjoy good food and great stories.  Take a peaceful stroll through Bonaventure Cemetery.   To get a great overview of the city while hearing some ghostly tales, take a ghost tour on the Trolley of the Doomed with Ghosts and Gravestones.

Smoky Mountains Roaring Fork Trail Tennessee
Smoky Mountains from Roaring Fork Motor Trail near Gatlinburg, Tennessee

Tennessee is a great destination for families!  The Pigeon Forge/Gatlinburg area is family favorite.  Explore the trails in the Great Smoky Mountains.  Visit one of the best aquariums we’ve ever experienced!  Be sure to see Ripley’s Aquarium of the Smokies in Gatlinburg.  Stroll the streets of Gatlinburg and see the sights.  Ride a ski-lift up into the Smokies at Ober Gatlinburg. Have a great family day or two in Dollywood in Pigeon Forge.

Colonial Williamsburg visiting actors
Visiting colonists to Williamsburg

If you enjoy history, Virginia is not to be missed!  You may believe that your kids wouldn’t enjoy the history that’s all around you in this great state, but we’ve found the interactive history to be a great experience for kids.  Enjoy the historic triangle of Williamsburg, Jamestown, and Yorktown.  At Williamsburg, explore Colonial Williamsburg and have dinner in a tavern.  Visit the Jamestown Settlement to get some hands-on history.  And don’t forget to see the American Revolution Museum in Yorktown.  All of these destinations include living history museums that kids love.

While in Virginia, don’t forget to stop for a few hours at Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello.  Or, if a beach is more your style, Virginia Beach offers a lot of family fun oceanside.  Take a day trip to Norfolk to see the Nauticus Museum featuring the battleship U.S.S. Wisconsin.  While you’re there, view current Naval ships on a boat tour on the Victory Rover.

St. Augustine Vilano Beach
Vilano Beach at St. Augustine

Our family loves to visit Florida.  While we enjoy our trips to Disney, we also love to spend a few days in St. Augustine.  We love to stay a few steps from the beach at the Hampton Inn in Vilano Beach.  Nearby in St. Augustine, learn about the history of Pirates at the Pirate Museum.  Explore the Castillo de San Marcos and Old Town.  Get a great overview of the city and history with a ghost tour on the Trolley of the Doomed with Ghosts and Gravestones!
