One spring day, my friend and I decided to make a day trip to Kansas City. Our two goals–The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art and some delicious Kansas City barbecue. We set out in the morning from Joplin, Missouri, and we arrived in KC right in time for lunch. I’d never tried Gates Bar-B-Q, and my friend was game. It was on. Gates has several locations in the Kansas City metro area. I’d never seen the 18th and Vine Jazz District, so we punched the location nearest to that area into Google Maps. We walked around the historic area, vowing to return when we could really explore and visit the jazz museum.  In the meantime, the murals were lovely. Street art is such a cool addition to any city. After walking around the area, we were ready to eat. After a short drive, we arrived at the Brooklyn Avenue location. History…

If you’re heading to Kansas City and hoping to sample some delicious KC barbecue, you should definitely give Arthur Bryant’s a try. You won’t be sorry. Arthur Bryant’s Barbecue is one of those legendary places to sample Kansas City’s most famous food. It’s not fancy, but don’t let that detour you. Arthur Bryant’s is one of the most well-known names in KC barbecue for a reason–the barbecue is to die for. Arthur Bryant’s: The History It seems Arthur Bryant’s gets its start with a man named Henry Perry, a man often referred to as Kansas City’s “father of Kansas City-style barbecue.”  In the early 1900s, Perry sold smoked meats to people who worked in the Garment District. Later, he moved to 18th and Vine, an area of Kansas City known as the historic Jazz District. This section of KC was sometimes described as a city within a city because the…

When you think of Estes Park, Colorado, barbecue is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. But if you’re in the area, you should definitely check out Smokin’Daves’s BBQ & Brew. We’re always game to try out a new barbecue place, and when I saw that the menu had bison ribs…well, we couldn’t resist. Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ: The Location 820 Moraine Avenue, Estes Park, Colorado We tried out the original location that sits in a rather picturesque location surrounded by mountains. The scenery is gorgeous, but that is true anywhere in Estes Park. The inside is rustic like you’d expect a barbecue joint to be. It has a sports bar kind of vibe, but it’s totally family-friendly. Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ: The Food We were eager to sample the barbecue, especially those bison ribs since I’d never tried them before. We had some difficult decisions to make. Jeff and…

If you’re wondering where to find some of the best BBQ in Kansas City, it’s a pretty good bet that Q39 will come up in the conversation.  Kansas City is known for its own special style of barbecue, and you could spend days trying them all.  Q39 is one of the restaurants that should be part of that mission, should you choose to accept it.  Though this place is newer than some of the classic Kansas City spots, it is certainly not lacking in any way, and for many, Q39 has become a favorite.  We’ve visited Q39’s two Kansas City-area locations, and we’re ready to show you why Q39 is a Kansas City must-do.  Read on about some of Kansas City’s best BBQ. Q39: The Midtown Location For our first Q39 experience, we ate at the original restuarant known as the Midtown location.  The place is located on 39th Street,…

If you’ve followed my “real life” at all, you’d know that I recently wrapped up directing the musical, The Little Mermaid, at the high school where I’ve been teaching for the past twelve years. As any director knows, the show still isn’t over after closing night. The set must be taken apart and all of the items you’ve rented or borrowed need to be returned. One of the items we borrowed, a rowboat for the “Kiss the Girl” scene, needed to be returned to Lee’s Summit, Missouri.  We opted to leave our youngest with Grandma and Grandpa for this road trip, and it was nice to have a day to ourselves.  After we made the delivery on a cool, blustery Saturday morning, my husband and I decided we needed some lunch. And that lunch should be Joe’s Kansas City Bar-B-Que. A Little Background We had not eaten at this place since…
