When we began planning a stop in Charleston, South Carolina, one of the places Jeff was really looking forward to was the Patriots Point Naval and Maritime Museum. He is really into military planes and ships, so this was the perfect place for him to explore. I love history, so I was all-in, too.  And Kristin, well, she likes exploring just about anything. Our Plan for Charleston We’d already spent nearly two weeks away from home on this particular trip to Walt Disney World. On the way down, we spent some time in Memphis.  After that, we had several days at Disney. Before we headed home, we spent a couple of nights in St. Augustine, Florida. For a final stop on the trip, we decided to spend a night in Charleston for the first time. We left St. Augustine in good time, and we arrived in Charleston just in time…

A couple of years ago, my family visited Boone Hall Plantation and Gardens in Charleston, South Carolina, on our drive home from Disney in Florida. Since we make the drive from Missouri, I like to find some places on the way and on the way home to explore. On this trip, we spent one night in Charleston. Since I’ve been reading more, I’m finding that I’m making more connections in my life. I recently started reading The Underground Railroad: A Novel by Colson Whitehead. I haven’t finished it yet, but so far, I am liking it. If you’re wondering which book I’m referring to, here is an affiliate link. As I read, the book made reference to Sullivan’s Island near Charleston. While we were there, we ate at Poe’s Tavern at Sullivan’s Island, before taking a walk on the beach. I could completely visualize the area. Click here to read more…

When we started planning a short trip to Charleston, I knew we’d love a visit to Fort Sumter.  While reading up on the tour, I soon discovered that Fort Sumter Tours handled the boat rides out to the fort.  Since we were only staying for a night on this trip, I thought it would be best to take the first ride of the day.  You can actually take the boat from downtown Charleston at Liberty Square or across the harbor at Patriots Point in Mount Pleasant; the schedule differs at each location.  Though we were staying in a hotel at Mount Pleasant, Liberty Square had the earlier time, so we chose that tour.  It’s not too difficult to drive across the Ravenel Bridge to Charleston, so we woke up early, checked out of the hotel, and headed to Charleston.  The first tour was at 9:30 am. Beginning the Fort Sumter…

A couple of years ago, a fellow English teacher and road tripper from a nearby school district posted pictures about her trip to Charleston on Facebook.  Ever since I saw the pictures of Kayla’s trip with her family, I knew I wanted to go.  One place she highlighted really caught my eye–Poe’s Tavern.  I teach an Edgar Allan Poe story, “The Masque of the Red Death,” to sophomores every year.  One year I even taught “The Cask of Amontillado” to freshman.  This may make me a nerd, but I also have an Edgar Allan Poe action figure that I take out when it’s time to do these stories.  The English teacher next door, my teacher bestie Rachael, celebrates Poe with a special day of food and films every year.  Visiting Poe’s Tavern just seemed right. Some Background Since we drive to Walt Disney World, I try to find places of…
