When traveling along Route 66, it’s fun to stop at the various roadside attractions you’ll encounter, both original to when Route 66 was in its prime and the newer stops that have resulted in renewed interest in Route 66. Henry’s Rabbit Ranch is one of those newer attractions. Located about 50 miles south of Springfield, Illinois, in Staunton, we found the ranch to be a well-timed stop when we made our trip home from Springfield to Joplin. And it’s a lot of fun! Henry’s Rabbit Ranch: A Little Background Rich Henry, the owner of Henry’s Rabbit Ranch, launched the attraction in 1999 after he came to the rescue of his daughter who needed help with her rabbits that had multiplied. Rich was glad to help, and eventually, the rabbits made their home at the ranch. Over the years, rabbits have come and gone. You can even pay your respects in…

No trip to Springfield, Illinois, is complete without a stop at the Lincoln Tomb at the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site.  We’ve been to Springfield twice now, and strangely, this has been the first stop both trips due to timing. It’s not a bad place to start; it’s an attraction you can experience in an hour or less and it does provide some background to get you started. My family loves history and historic sites, and we also love learning about Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. We consider the Lincoln Tomb a must-see on your Springfield trip. Arriving at Oak Ridge Cemetery The road leading up to Oak Ridge Cemetery is lovely in the summer. When you get close, you can’t miss the entrance. Just follow the signing to get to the tomb. Of course, you’ll be able to see it from a distance. It’s rather…

In the summer, you can’t go wrong cooling down at Knights Action Park and ending the day with a movie at Route 66 Drive-In. If you’re planning a trip with your family to Springfield, Illinois, to see the Lincoln attractions, you may want to add some kid-centered attractions into the mix. We love history, but we also like to mix in some “kid-centered” fun. One of those attractions was the Kidzeum of Health and Science.  But we also spent time at Knights Action Park and Route 66 Drive-In, two attractions that are the perfect ways to spend an afternoon and an evening. We’d like to thank Visit Springfield for hosting our visit! As always, all opinions are honest and our own. Knights Action Park: The Waterpark The waterpark was the perfect place to cool off on a hot July afternoon. Our daughter isn’t into thrill rides, including big slides at…

If you’re exploring the Lincoln attractions in Springfield, Illinois, with your family, you may want to build in some experiences for the little ones where they can explore and burn off some energy. Kidzeum of Health and Science, the children’s museum in Springfield, is the perfect place for just that. We’d like to thank Visit Springfield for sponsoring our visit! Arriving at Kidzeum 412 Adams Street Since Kidzeum is located downtown and we were planning to visit several locations there from morning until at least early afternoon, we picked a place that was centrally located for our plans of the day. It was a warm morning in July. We decided to make Kidzeum our first visit of the day, so we arrived at opening, hoping to avoid any crowds. As we walked to the children’s museum, we noticed that a famers’ market was in full swing. Keep that in mind…

We’d like to thank Visit Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum for hosting our visit. As always, all opinions are honest and my own. I just want to say right off the bat–this is my favorite museum. My favorite museum anywhere. We visited the first time about ten years ago before Kristin was born. When we had the opportunity to visit again, I was thrilled! I’ve never been to a museum as immersive as this one. Trust me; you want to check this place out! Arriving at the Lincoln Museum You can find ample parking in downtown Springfield, Illinois.  Metered parking is available near the museum, and there is a parking garage across the street a block away.  Currently, as you approach the museum, you can’t help but notice the large 31-foot-tall statue of Lincoln and a contemporary man out front.   This statue, named “Return Visit,” will…
