We’d like to thank Visit Springfield for sponsoring our trip to Springfield! As always, all opinions are honest and our own. Last summer, we had the opportunity to spend a few days in Springfield, Illinois, to visit the Lincoln attractions and everything else Springfield had to offer families. If you’re looking for an awesome Midwest road trip destination for your family that mixes history, learning, and family fun, then Springfield is the place for you! First Things First: Head to the Springfield Visitors Center Before you do anything else, stop in at the Springfield Visitors Center in downtown Springfield at the corner of 6th and Adams St. They will give you schedules of any events happening, and they may have some great coupons! They will definitely answer any questions you have about the area. Be sure to also check out the display of Lincoln’s law office. The building is the…

No trip to Springfield, Illinois, is complete without a stop at the Lincoln Tomb at the Lincoln Tomb State Historic Site.  We’ve been to Springfield twice now, and strangely, this has been the first stop both trips due to timing. It’s not a bad place to start; it’s an attraction you can experience in an hour or less and it does provide some background to get you started. My family loves history and historic sites, and we also love learning about Abraham Lincoln, the 16th President of the United States. We consider the Lincoln Tomb a must-see on your Springfield trip. Arriving at Oak Ridge Cemetery The road leading up to Oak Ridge Cemetery is lovely in the summer. When you get close, you can’t miss the entrance. Just follow the signing to get to the tomb. Of course, you’ll be able to see it from a distance. It’s rather…

When you visit Springfield, Illinois, no trip is complete without a visit to the Lincoln Home. This residence, the only home the Lincolns owned and the place where they spent the majority of their marriage, is a great place to bring the family as you explore the Lincoln attractions in Springfield. Lincoln’s neighborhood is now a historic site and part of the National Park Service. Plan for a couple of hours here; you won’t be sorry! Lincoln Home Visitor Center We arrived in the morning on our last day in Springfield. I highly recommend doing this attraction earlier in the trip, if possible, but our timing turned out to be a little off. No worries, though. We’d already been to the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Museum and Library, and we’d done Lincoln’s Ghost Walk: Legends and Lore. In fact, we started our Lincoln adventure with a stop at his tomb. We’d…

During our visit to Springfield, Illinois, we took the tour, Lincoln’s Ghost Walk: Legends and Lore.  This attraction was not sponsored, but our visit to Springfield was sponsored by Visit Springfield, and we were hosted at other area attractions.  Incidentally, we received a coupon book from Visit Springfield, and we used a coupon for this tour.  I highly recommend stopping by their downtown office.  In fact, this tour starts at the statue right in front of the Visit Springfield office.  Here is the address: 1 S. Old State Capitol Plaza.  Now let the tour begin! Meeting Up for Lincoln’s Ghost Walk We really weren’t sure what to expect.  We followed the instructions in the brochure provided by Visit Springfield and saw that the meeting place was at this statue of the Lincolns in front of the Visitor’s Center. You can see the Visitor’s Center in the background. There didn’t seem…

We’d like to thank Visit Springfield and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum for hosting our visit. As always, all opinions are honest and my own. I just want to say right off the bat–this is my favorite museum. My favorite museum anywhere. We visited the first time about ten years ago before Kristin was born. When we had the opportunity to visit again, I was thrilled! I’ve never been to a museum as immersive as this one. Trust me; you want to check this place out! Arriving at the Lincoln Museum You can find ample parking in downtown Springfield, Illinois.  Metered parking is available near the museum, and there is a parking garage across the street a block away.  Currently, as you approach the museum, you can’t help but notice the large 31-foot-tall statue of Lincoln and a contemporary man out front.   This statue, named “Return Visit,” will…

Things to Do in Gettysburg Gettysburg is just one of those great historic places that we’ve been wanting to experience for a long time.  We wanted, of course, to learn more about the battle, but we also wanted to make some family memories together.  It’s important for my daughter to learn about the events that shaped our nation, even if she is only seven-years-old.  Though the events in Gettysburg were tragic, I wanted her to have a basic understanding of what happened along with doing some family-friendly activities.  We spent four nights in Gettysburg, but I think you could easily do a shorter trip or spend more time here.  We spent most of our evenings watching the sunset over the battlefield.  Here are our recommendations after experiencing Gettysburg. Take a Tour of the Battlefield We took a tour with the Association of Licensed Battlefield Guides, and it was fantastic! This…
