Ever since I learned that the historic Old Faithful Inn was a place, I knew I needed to stay there one day. My dream was realized this summer when we made our first visit to Yellowstone National Park. We also happened to stay on my birthday. How amazing is that? National park lodges sell out quickly, so we booked our two nights at Old Faithful Inn about 11 months in advance. If you’re planning a trip to the most popular parks, I certainly recommend planning your trip a year out so you won’t have to settle for anything less than what you want to do. Plus, you’ll have all year to look forward to your awesome trip! Disclaimer: One thing I should point out right now–Old Faithful Inn is NOT a luxury resort with all the bells and whistles. In fact, if you stay in the Old House like we…

If you’ve ever watched the Food Network, you’re probably at least familiar with Ree Drummond, also known as The Pioneer Woman. Actually, I admire her a lot. She started a blog in 2006 and turned it into an amazing empire–cookbooks, a cooking show, merchandise, a boutique hotel, a magazine, and the Mercantile, a store with a restaurant and bakery located in the small town of Pawhuska, Oklahoma, near her husband’s ranch.  Just imagine being able to showcase your life and turn it into a lucrative career; it’s every blogger’s dream! That’s why when my family had the opportunity to stop by The Pioneer Woman Mercantile, I jumped at the chance. And it wasn’t just because I was a blogger. The food sounded amazing, and getting a chance to see the beautiful items for sale in the store was too hard to resist. So one summer afternoon, we stopped in for…

Savannah, Georgia, is a beautiful place to visit. While the city may have a reputation as a destination for couples or girls-only weekends, Savannah offers a lot of fun for families, especially if you enjoy mixing family fun with history like we do. The Backstory We made the trek to Savannah after one of our Disney World visits. We drive from Joplin, Missouri, so I’m always on the lookout for somewhere to explore on the drive home. I was first drawn in by Savannah’s beauty and charm. I’d read John Berendt’s book, Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, and I’m also a fan of the movie. Add in the book Scarlett by Alexandra Ripley and the movie Forrest Gump, and I had plenty of reasons to make a stop in Savannah. Arriving in Savannah, Georgia We’d just spent two nights in St. Augustine, Florida, so we were only…

When you think of Estes Park, Colorado, barbecue is probably not the first thing that comes to mind. But if you’re in the area, you should definitely check out Smokin’Daves’s BBQ & Brew. We’re always game to try out a new barbecue place, and when I saw that the menu had bison ribs…well, we couldn’t resist. Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ: The Location 820 Moraine Avenue, Estes Park, Colorado We tried out the original location that sits in a rather picturesque location surrounded by mountains. The scenery is gorgeous, but that is true anywhere in Estes Park. The inside is rustic like you’d expect a barbecue joint to be. It has a sports bar kind of vibe, but it’s totally family-friendly. Smokin’ Dave’s BBQ: The Food We were eager to sample the barbecue, especially those bison ribs since I’d never tried them before. We had some difficult decisions to make. Jeff and…

One of my favorite things to do at Walt Disney World is to eat at the fun restaurants on property, and one of my family’s favorites in any park is the Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant at Disney’s Hollywood Studios. This restaurant recreates a drive-in movie experience complete with a big screen and tables inside convertibles! If this doesn’t have you sold yet, I’ll explain my three reasons this restaurant ranks so high on our list! 1. The atmosphere inside Sci-Fi Dine-In Theater Restaurant is just plain awesome. As I explained above, the restaurant had some of the most unique theming anywhere. From the outside, it looks like nothing special. But inside, it’s like a whole other world. Most of the tables inside are in convertibles, and most of them seat six adults. If you have a smaller party, you may end up with some “hitchhikers,” but honestly, you may not…

If you’re planning a trip to Disneyland in Anaheim, California, be sure to put Storytellers Cafe on your to-do list! Mickey’s Tales of Adventure Buffet was a wonderful memory for us. One of my favorite things to do on a Disney trip is to try fun restaurants and meet our favorite characters. Luckily, Disney allows you to combine both of these into one experience. Character dining is something we always make time for on our trips. When I saw the adorable outfits the characters wore at Storytellers Cafe, I knew we had to give it a try! Visiting the Grand Californian Hotel Storytellers Cafe is located in the Grand Californian Hotel and Spa. What’s cool about this hotel, besides the architecture and theming, is that it has a private entrance to Disney California Adventure Park. You can walk out of the resort and into Grizzly Peak, the park of the…

What do you do when you only have a few days to spend in California on your first trip? You spend one night in San Diego. Of course, I would’ve loved to spend more time there, and I hope to go back one day. But for this trip–one night. Before Old Town San Diego We’d already rented a car and stayed two nights in LA. We had a fabulous time checking out some of the places we’d only seen on TV shows or movies. We stayed at the Magic Castle Hotel and had a great time in Hollywood. You can click here to read all about the Magic Castle Hotel. To read more about the Hollywood Walk of Fame, click here. How about the Sunset Strip? Click here. After our second night at the Magic Castle Hotel, we woke up early to make the drive to San Diego. I loved…

If you’re taking a road trip in the Southwest, and you’re traveling along Route 66 or nearby, why not stay at a historic Route 66 roadside motel, like the Blue Swallow Motel in Tucumcari, New Mexico? For this road trip, we opted for unique and nostalgic lodging, and we couldn’t have had more fun taking in the details and imagining what it used to be like to travel America’s iconic highway just a few decades ago. Blue Swallow Motel: The Property The lobby of the Blue Swallow is like a time capsule. You’ll see all kinds of details from yesteryear, and if you look closely, you’ll see items from other locations along Route 66. I was surprised to see a pop bottle from Cozy Dog Drive-In in Springfield, Illinois. The fireplace is fun to check out, too. So cozy! The property is intimate and adorable. When the neon comes on in…

We’d like to thank Visit Springfield for sponsoring our trip to Springfield! As always, all opinions are honest and our own. Last summer, we had the opportunity to spend a few days in Springfield, Illinois, to visit the Lincoln attractions and everything else Springfield had to offer families. If you’re looking for an awesome Midwest road trip destination for your family that mixes history, learning, and family fun, then Springfield is the place for you! First Things First: Head to the Springfield Visitors Center Before you do anything else, stop in at the Springfield Visitors Center in downtown Springfield at the corner of 6th and Adams St. They will give you schedules of any events happening, and they may have some great coupons! They will definitely answer any questions you have about the area. Be sure to also check out the display of Lincoln’s law office. The building is the…
